The man was wrongly accused of murder, because the woman and her lover cut off her two fingers and buried them in the garden.
Then they disappeared. The police looked for the woman, and found the fingers, and the husband was blamed for her murder. He spent 30 years in gaol for this crime. When he got out, he met her by chance and killed her. he could not be charged with murder again, because under the law you cannot be charged with the same crime twice (this is called
double jeopardy).
